Lyrics

Bill Terry (The CO Song)
Roy Hurd

My name is Bill Terry I’m a state pen CO
A guard at Clinton Prison about twenty years or so
It puts food on the table and the medical is good
So you won’t hear me complainin though most the time I could

I was born here in these mountains where the Saranac river winds
Me and Rita we got married back in 1969
I took the state corrections test in my thirty second year
Started workin at this prison just like most the boys round here

Chorus:
When I walk through the big and I hear it close and lock
I get a chill right down my back before I punch that clock
I’ll never show em what I’m feeling though the stress is second to none
I try to let it go and not bring it home when my shift is done

I spend my days with killers rapists and thieves
You gotta read their body language so you know what’s up their sleeve
When you’re out here in the middle you don’t know when somebody will crack
You gotta have eyes in the back of your head and hope the tower guard’s got your back

l feel sorry for the young convicts and the hell their gonna meet
Sent here to the big house fresh right off the street
I’ve seen things I can’t let myself think about at all
I know God is out there somewhere but he aint behind these walls

Repeat Chorus:

Some guards take to drinkin to try and keep their sanity
Me I like to hunt and fish yea that’s my therapy
The job is not physical but the mental that’s unreal
The hardest part is to keep your heart and not shut down all you feel

So I think about my family they get me through it all you know
Though I lost Rita to cancer a few years ago
She’s still my strength when I’m in here till I get back outside
I carry her right here in my heart true love never dies

Repeat Chorus X2:

My name is Bill Terry I’m a state pen CO
A guard at Clinton Prison about twenty years or so
